The House Rabbit Society's St. Louis Chapter is sponsoring a Bunny Expo from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Humane Society of Missouri, 1201 Macklind Ave. in St. Louis.
The public is invited to learn how to adopt rabbits as house pets and how to properly care for them.
The event was prompted by a recent rescue in Stone County, Mo. Sheriff's deputies discovered 87 neglected New Zealand white rabbits in an overcrowded tractor-trailer. The breeder planned to sell them for meat.
The Humane Society of Missouri confiscated the rabbits and turned them over to the House Rabbit Society to keep them from being euthanized.
The rabbits later multiplied for a total of 127. Some are in a House Rabbit Society shelter in Fenton, Mo., and some are in private foster homes.
Before the rescue, the House Rabbit Society already had more than 150 rabbits in its care. All those available for adoption have been spayed or neutered.
