An Edwardsville man is one of 12 to be ordained as a deacon on Saturday in the Catholic Diocese of Springfield.

Jerry L. Cato of Edwardsville will become a deacon and will serve at St. Cecilia Parish in Glen Carbon, where he is a member. He and the others will be ordained at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, 245 N. Amos Ave. in Springfield, by Archbishop-designate George J. Lucas.

Lucas in 2002 established a deacon preparation program for the Springfield diocese. It requires five years of study and ordained deacons may assist at liturgies and preach at Mass as well as baptize, witness marriages and preside at wake services and graveside services.

The Springfield diocese is 131 parishes in 28 counties in central Illinois, including Madison County. Lucas is leaving the diocese to serve as archbishop of Omaha.
