June was wetter than normal for Illinois, but only the 25th wettest June on record.
June had a precipitation of 5.3 inches, which is 1.2 inches above normal. The total precipitation for the first half of 2009 was 24.2 inches, which is 4.8 inches above normal, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey.
The wettest site in Illinois last month was near Rockford with 8.75 inches of rain.
The statewide average temperature was 0.7 inches above normal for the month, with the average temperature for the whole month at 72.6 degrees. The second half of the month, however, averaged about 4.1 degree above normal.
The outlook for July from the National Weather Service calls for an increased chance of below-normal temperatures across the northern two-thirds of Illinois and an increased chance of above-normal precipitation across much of Illinois. The outlook for July through September shows an increased chance of below-normal temperatures along with near-normal precipitation.
