Some pieces of the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair will be visiting the Smithton Homecoming on Saturday.
The Smithton Historical and Genealogical Society will host a display of more than 200 items from the fair that have been gathered by a local collector. The display will be open from noon until 4 p.m., at the society headquarters in the old village hall at 115 Melinda Street, two blocks west of the police department on Illinois 159. Admission is free.
The display includes a few pieces of the building material used for the temporary buildings at the fair. It is rare because for the most part the buildings were knocked down and the material was buried. It also has a stereoscope viewer with cards from the fair that have a three dimensional effect.
"It's something for people to come to before the parade which starts at 5 p.m.," Weber said. "We want to increase the interest in the historical society."
