Q: Many years ago you had a recipe for finger paint. I made it with my daughter, and it was a huge hit. Now my daughter is coming to visit with my grandson, and I'd love to do this again.

A: This is one step up from making mud pies, but is a great summer activity. As I recall, my children and I painted ourselves as much as we painted sheets of shelf paper. I've got to admire your memory, as we printed this recipe 26 years ago!

HOMEMADE FINGER PAINT

2 cups water

1/3 cup cornstarch

Food coloring

Bring 1 1/2 cups water to a boil. Dissolve the cornstarch in the remaining 1/2 cup of water. Gradually add the cornstarch paste to the boiling water, stirring well, and cook 30 seconds. Remove from heat and when cool, add food coloring of your choice. (The mixture thickens even more as it cools.) Makes 2 cups.
