A Chicago woman was sentenced Thursday in a Benton courtroom to more than seven years in prison for intending to distribute heroin.
Genesis M. Effinger, 19, was sentenced to 87 months in prison, fined $200 and placed on four years of supervised release.
Effinger previously pleaded guilty to a federal indictment charging her with conspiracy to distribute, and possess with the intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin.
She was one of five people charged in December in connection with a heroin ring. One of her co-defendants previously was sentenced to 135 months in prison. The other co-defendants have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
The investigation was conducted by the Clinton County Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police, Centralia Police Department, Marion County Sheriff's Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
