O'FALLON -- Soccer, flag football and lacrosse leagues are planned for a vacant building that had housed indoor softball and other sports.
Vetta Sports in St. Louis purchased the 30,000-square-foot building on 10 acres on 590 Hartman Lane in O'Fallon. Johnson Properties in Fairview Heights completed the transaction Monday. Associate Tim Johnston said that the recreational building, formerly known as Way To Play, has sat empty for about three years. He said the new owners will make a good fit.
"They're a first-rate operation with some good facilities and people in St. Louis," Johnston said. "It will be pretty good for the area."
Vetta Sports has been providing indoor soccer leagues since it was founded in Webster Groves in 1988. Brothers Pete and John Spanos own the business, which includes locations in St. Charles, Mo.; Manchester, Mo.; and Concord, Mo.
Pete Spanos said almost $2 million will be invested in the new metro-east locale, but would not disclose other terms regarding the deal.
"We've been wanting to go to the metro-east area for many years, and we just hadn't found the right situation," Spanos said. "We know there are a lot of soccer players over here by the number of consumers who come over to St. Louis to play. We finally found the right fit; we're excited to be part of metro-east area."
The new building is slated to be ready by Nov. 15. Leagues will be available to those ages 3 to adult.
