Christmas is the season of giving, but as tough economic times face almost every household, more and more people will turn back the clocks this holiday season to a much simpler time when gifts cost little and came from the heart.
Candy is the universal gift -everyone loves it. From candy canes to fudge, it's a traditional part of the holiday season.
If you're looking for something new to jazz up your time spent in the kitchen this Christmas, candy making is worth a shot. It promises memory-making time among the family, and heartwarming gifts to give that will last weeks longer than cookies in terms of freshness. And best of all, if you can't stand the heat, you don't have to get out of the kitchen.
Ann Davis, owner of Toot's Cake and Candy Supplies in Belleville, says making candy is not as hard as most people think. Some good homemade candy recipes, the right ingredients, and a little dedication and time are all one needs to get started.
"It's a safe and fun thing that even the kids can help out with," she said. "There is much less risk they will get burned by hot pans, etc., than traditional baking, and they can let their creativity shine, especially when making chocolate lollipops or candies with specially shaped molds.
"And in my view, a gift of homemade food is a gift from the heart. It's so easy to go to a candy shop to buy a box, have it wrapped, and give it away. Homemade candy says 'I love you' so much more than store bought candy, and can taste just as good, or better."
Some recipes are a little more difficult than others, making it not worth the effort for many. The following recipes are Toot's customer faves that Davis says are as easy to make as they are to eat:
