I have to say, the Real Housewives of Orange County have nothing on my girlfriends. They should film us for a weekend. Actually, it's probably a blend of Cougar Town, The Bachelor and Survivor.

We have a good mix of married and singles. However, on my recent birthday weekend at Lake of the Ozarks, it was all the single ladies (plus one of our married girlfriends). Uh, oh. I shouldn't say "my married friend." The last person who did that is no longer in our group. That's the Survivor element of things. One day you're in, the next day you're voted off the island.

But the reason that gal introduced people as her "married" friend or "mommy" friend is another side of the group - The Bachelor aspect. Yes, the unattached girls are all in the dating game. But, since we're not on a TV show, it's not a competition for one man. Seriously, you do not need to announce to everyone you meet who's single and who isn't.

And, you never know when someone will show up wearing an engagement ring. That happened over the weekend. Kelly* joined the group for lunch on Saturday. As we're ordering, someone notices the ring. Kelly announces "I'm engaged!" followed by "Bob proposed to me last night. But I'm not sure I'm going to keep it" as she admired her ring. Well, admired isn't the right word. Inspected would be more accurate. According to her, the ring "isn't big enough." And, just like on The Bachelor, some relationships don't work out. That ring was returned on Sunday.

The Cougar Town twist within our group is always fun. I rode to the Lake with my friend, Anna. She was telling me all about this new guy in her life - he's tall, dark, handsome - and 26. When Tyler asked how old she was, Anna had to prepare him. "Are you ready?" she asked. "Yes," he replied naively. "Thirty-nine."

Anna waited for his reaction, not sure if he would run for the hills. But he didn't. He still can't believe she's 39. But like Jules (Courtney Cox' character on Cougar Town), Anna has a college-aged son. Unfortunately, the young man felt the need to bring that up one evening. "You know, I'm only 6 years older than him."

As Jules says to her 20-something boyfriend on Cougar Town, "Its quiet time Josh."
