Perspective.

It's an amazing thing.

I recently had a chance to catch up with a colleague I see only once a year at a conference. I of course complimented her on her amazing shoes first then casually asked "New haircut?" She responded, "Cancer." Wow. I had no idea she had been sick. And, to look at her, you would never have known, except her mid-length hair was now a cute pixie cut. She told me she had been diagnosed with breast cancer right after our conference last year, had surgery, chemo, radiation and was now cancer free.

I was stunned. She was the picture of health then and now. Her attitude is amazing!

Then, at lunch, she shared with our table that she was in the process of finalizing her divorce. After 12 years of marriage, her husband told her he didn't love her. He was going to tell her a year ago, until she was diagnosed with cancer. And, to top it all off, she had to pay him alimony!

It was hard for me to imagine as we sat there calmly eating lunch, what this young lady was going through. And, by comparison, how good things are going in my life. I have had difficult times before, and some days when work is stressful, I think I have it tough now. But I don't. And I realized that after hearing what my friend was going through.

This was a wake up call that my life is really, really great and I should be more thankful each day. And not sweat the small stuff. And to remember the hard times and be glad those are behind me (for the moment). And to remember that even when I have a hard day, there are still many things I'm grateful for.

So here is my (partial) thankful list for today:

• I have a great job (yes, it's stressful at times, but what job isn't?)
• I have loving parents who I see often (probably not often enough)
• I have a wonderful boyfriend who is thoughtful (and handsome!)
• I have great friends who support me through all my troubles (real and imagined)
• I have a fun collection of shoes (have I mentioned I love shoes?)

And now I have perspective, which is truly amazing.
