Cards will skip Garcia's rotation turn

Posted by Scott Wuerz on August 28, 2011

The Cardinals on Sunday announced that starting pitcher Jaime Garcia won't take his next turn in the rotation.

No specific reason was given. But he is not believed to be injured. Garcia has lost four of five starts since he signed a contract extension in July. The team is apparently trying to give him an extended period of rest to break the streak.

Since his fortunes have taken a turn for the worse Garcia has had some sloppy mechanics. He also seems to be fatigued, often starting well but suddenly falling apart. It hasn't helped that pitching coach Dave Duncan is away tending to his ill wife. But things like that can't be helped.

Brandon Dickson is expected to be called up to take Garcia's turn in the rotation. During a previous call up Dickson hurled four innings and allowed two hits and no runs.
