At a time when many are tightening their belts and closing their wallets, an East St. Louis law firm and an Alabama litigation group opened their checkbooks to help a homeless shelter in need.
The Schoen Walton Telken & Foster law firm in East St. Louis and Greg Cade with the Birmingham, Ala.-based Environmental Litigation Group PC that has worked in the metro-east, together gave a donation of $3,000 to the Dorris Davis Helping Hands Shelter in East St. Louis on Thursday afternoon.
"I was surprised, very surprised," said Dorris Davis, director and founder of the shelter. "He called me and he got the address and he came on over. It will help out a whole lot, a whole lot and gave me a great big boost. Looks like we'll have our dinner this year, everything is looking up."
Earlier this week Davis was worried he wouldn't have enough in food and cash donations to hold the organization's 32nd annual Christmas dinner and toy giveaway for needy families at the East St. Louis City Hall. The dinner typically feeds about 1,000 needy families.
The shelter is in need of canned goods, turkeys, ham, toys, new and gently-used coats and shoes, and cash donations.
The shelter is a nonprofit organization and cash donations are tax-deductible. It is located at 1501 Winstanley Ave. in East St. Louis and donations can be dropped off at the shelter or by calling 271-1466 or 779-6372.
