Illinois State Police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old Granite City man who collapsed after being arrested and later died.
Shannon Walsh Sr. died Tuesday at Gateway Regional Medical Center, according to Illinois State Police and his obituary. An autopsy was conducted Wednesday, but police are waiting to release the cause and manner of death until they speak to all the witnesses, Capt. James Morrisey said.
Granite City Police had arrested Walsh Jan. 19 on traffic offenses, according to police. He collapsed when he arrived at the police station and was taken to a hospital.
Morrisey would not comment on whether there was a struggle between officers and Walsh or provide other details about what happened until the investigation is complete.
Granite City Police turned over the case to Illinois State Police who will submit their findings to the Madison County State's Attorney's office.
No officers have been placed on leave since the incident, Granite City Police Major Jeff Connor said. He and Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn referred all other questions to Illinois State Police.
Walsh was an Army veteran and enjoyed riding his motorcycle, his obituary states.
Walsh's relatives in Granite City could not be reached for comment. A brother, who lives in Missouri, said he would not be able to comment.
