Cardinals activate Allen Craig, call up Cleto and Freeman

The Cardinals have activated outfielder and first baseman Allen Craig from the disabled list and shuffled around the bullpen.

Chuckie Fick was sent back to Class AAA Memphis while outfielder Skip Schumaker was placed on the 15-day DL to make room for righty reliever Maikel Cleto and southpaw bullpenner Sam Freeman.

Cleto was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 26 innings pitched at Memphis. He allowed 21 hits and nine walks while striking out 34 with his overpowering fastball. The timing of the Cleto call up is a little bit questionable since he's been going through a bit of a rough patch. He's allowed a run in each of his last three relief appearances.

Freeman has only made six appearances at Class AAA Memphis since his promotion for Class AA Springfield. Between the two stops he is 1-5 with a 2.31 ERA. He has allowed 17 hits and eight walks in 23 1/2 innings. Meanwhile, Freeman has struck out 17 hitters.

Of course, the Cardinals desperately need help from the left side in the bullpen. But Freeman has backwards splits. He's held right batters to a .167 average in his brief time in Class AAA while lefties are hitting .300 against him.
