Cards summon Double-A pitcher, demote Cleto, put Garcia on 60-day DL

Published: July 16, 2012

The St. Louis Cardinals on Monday purchased the contract of Class AA right-hander Trevor Rosenthal, and returned Maikel Cleto to Class AAA Memphis.

The team also transferred left-hander Jaime Garcia to the 60-day disabled list. He has been bothered by shoulder and elbow problems this season.

Rosenthall, 22, will wear No. 64 and will be available for the Cardinals' game in Milwaukee this evening.

He was 8-6 in 17 starts for Springfield in the Texas League, with a 2.78 ERa in 94 innings. He struck out 94 and walked 37.

He is from Lee's Summit, Mo., and was the Cards' 21st-round draft pick in 2009.

Garcia, hoping to return at some point in the next month from his arm trouble, will be eligible to come off the 60-day DL at some point in early August.
