Granite City boy dies after being shot by his 7-year-old sister

Published: July 22, 2012

A 10-year-old Granite City boy died Saturday afternoon in rural northeastern Jefferson County, near Mount Vernon, after his 7-year-old sister accidentally shot him with a gun found in a recreational vehicle owned by his grandfather, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday.

The body of Christian G. Clark was discovered inside a motor home located in a wooded area at a relative's residence at 13339 Baseline Road in Dix.

Christian and his 7-year-old sister, the grandchildren of Jason G. Clark Sr., were inside the recreational vehicle.

The girl picked up the long gun and accidentally discharged a round shortly before 3:30 p.m., the sheriff's office reported.

After the sheriff's office received a 911 call, the Illinois State Police, the county coroner and the Department of Children and Family services were dispatched to the scene.

An autopsy on the boy was performed early Sunday afternoon. All signs indicate this "was a tragic accident," the sheriff's office said.

Although foul play is not suspected, an investigation is still being pursued by the sheriff's office, the county state's attorney, the Illinois State Police and the county coroner.

Christian is survived by his mother, Kristina Clark, of Granite City; his sister Halee; his grandfather and grandmother, Jason and Rosemarie Clark, of Granite City; and many other family members in Madison and St. Clair counties.
