Second Belleville house fire in 7 hours sends two to hospital

Published: August 7, 2012

Belleville firefighters handled two house fires overnight and early Tuesday.

Fire and heavy smoke at 7:16 a.m. Tuesday damaged the second floor of a house at 511 S. Charles St. in Belleville, Belleville Deputy Fire Chief Steve Klingler said. Two residents on the upper floor escaped down a stairway, but both were taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital for heavy smoke inhalation and one was cut trying to break glass. A third occupant on the first floor was alerted by the other two and escaped unharmed.

The conditions of the two were not available Tuesday afternoon.

"The two occupants were very fortunate to be able to escape on their own," Klingler said.

Firefighters had the fire under control within 15 minutes and no other injuries were reported. Fire investigators were wrapping up Tuesday afternoon but had yet to file their reports, Klingler said.

The other fire was at 12:07 a.m. Tuesday at 12 E. D St. Klingler said it was a small fire but very suspicious. No injuries were reported.
