Belleville man killed in warehouse accident involving 'laser guided vehicle'

Published: August 7, 2012

A worker was killed in a work-related accident early Tuesday morning at a warehouse in Granite City.

James P. Gentilello Jr., 43, of Belleville, was pronounced dead at 6:25 a.m. at Kraft Food, 2901 Missouri Ave., according to a news release from Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn.

Gentilello was an employee at Kraft. At 5:14 a.m., he was discovered pinned between an unmanned automated "laser guided vehicle" used to haul and lift loaded pallets of product and a metal racking unit used to store loaded pallets of product, Nonn said.

Gentilello's job duties required him to oversee the operation of the laser guided vehicles within the plant warehouse, Nonn said.

The Granite City Police Department, the Madison County Coroner's Office and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the fatal accident.

An autopsy examination is planned for Tuesday; routine toxicological testing for the presence of drugs or alcohol will be performed, Nonn said.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
