BELLEVILLE — Police have taken a suspect into custody in connection with a reported sexual assault and home invasion Friday morning.

Police were called about 6:30 a.m. Friday to the 300 block of North Seventh Street, where a 54-year-old female stated that she was sexually assaulted in her home. Information from the victim lead investigators to a suspect who was taken into custody. The suspect is being held at the Belleville Police Department.

The victim was taken to a Belleville hospital for medical treatment and later released.

Detective Mark Heffernan said police plan to apply for charges during the weekend. The case is pending review by the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office

"We feel confident that the suspect we have in custody is responsible for this crime," Heffernan said.
