Qualifications: I have served as a family practice doctor and emergency room physician for more than 20 years. I've worked as a front-line health care provider for regular people in small towns and larger communities in Central Illinois. I currently work in the emergency room at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. I know what it's like to struggle in this tough economy because of what I've been through in my own life. When I was just 13, my father died of cancer. I started working as a dishwasher to help pay the family's bills. I stocked shelves to help put myself through college and mopped floors in the middle of the night and did laundry to pay for medical school at the University of Illinois. I see the problems with our health care system up close every day. I have lived through it. When my first wife was diagnosed with cancer, I struggled to get her the proper treatments. I had to fight with the insurance company to get them to pay for the care she needed before she died. I am a doctor, father, husband and neighbor who will bring a healthy dose of common sense to Washington, D.C.

Top issues: Congress just isn't working for working people anymore. I'm ready to fix that. I'm tired of seeing the wealthiest few -- the millionaires and the multi-national corporations -- rig the system and force middle-class families, students and retirees on fixed incomes to pay the price. I believe entrenched politicians of both parties have lost sight of who they are really supposed to be working for and what makes this country truly great -- the people I meet every day at the ER and on the campaign trail. I'm running to revive the fading American Dream and make sure DC is setting the right priorities for our families again, such as protecting American jobs and strengthening and preserving Medicare and Social Security.
