Qualifications: I grew up in Taylorville, the heart of the 13th District, and I still live there today with my wife and our three children. Early in our marriage, my wife, who is a nurse, was diagnosed with cancer. I was with her for every chemo treatment, and she has been cancer-free for 13 years. This first-hand experience with our health care system, including the ability to choose our own doctor when we needed to change, is a major reason for my support of repealing and replacing Obamacare. While growing up I worked at my parents' restaurant, so I've experienced the daily challenges facing small businesses. As projects director for U.S. Rep. John Shimkus, I learned how the federal government can help our communities, and how it can hurt them.
Top issues: Repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. I want to ensure a market-based approach to the delivery of health care, as opposed to a top-down, government-mandated program. It is vital to give people true choice in health care and to ensure neither business nor government is saddled with a program which overreaches. We must take action to relieve the burdensome federal regulatory environment which has the effect of stifling business growth and job development. Business owners need to spend time running their business and contributing to their communities and the economy, not worrying about the overwhelming amount of government paperwork. Rein in federal spending so we can tackle the crushing national debt which has been accumulated.
