Education: A.S., Lewis and Clark Community College; Bachelors, SIUE; Masters, Saint Louis University
Previous offices: Auditor, 2000-2012; County Board, 1994-2000
Qualifications: Prior to serving as auditor I worked 22 years for Catholic Charities, 15 as the director. As auditor, I have received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the county's financial report for all years I have served as auditor. I was elected Auditor of the Year for the State of Illinois in 2010. I have implemented technology upgrades which have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars. I voluntarily opted out of the Elected County Officials pension plan when elected in 2000, saving Madison County $640,000 to date and in 2011 I was the first elected official to decline the annual scheduled pay increase. I also implemented the first-ever fraud hotline to help prevent and stop fraud and abuse in government. I believe all of these points demonstrate strong performance in office and the ability to positively lead on issues that directly impact taxpayers.
Top issues: As demonstrated by the numerous awards I've received for my performance as auditor, from receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting every year I've been in office to being elected Auditor of the Year for the State of Illinois in 2010, I have a strong record of achievement for taxpayers. The top issue in this race is a choice between someone who has a strong record of results and a reputation as an independent watchdog or someone who, as a direct result of his decisions, lost $1.03 million in taxpayer dollars.
