Chris Carpenter to start Friday for Cardinals

Posted by Scott Wuerz on September 16, 2012

The Cardinals have announced that ace Chris Carpenter will make his first start of the season Friday against the Cubs.

Obviously, a member of the rotation only plays every fifth game. But Carpenter is the Redbirds' undisputed leader, so I wonder if this will finally be the thing the club will rally around to reverse it's poor play.

Carpenter ought to be able to make about three starts before the end of the season and then he would presumably be in prime shape for a potential playoff run. And that's a good thing because the rotation has been an unmitigated mess lately. Plus, it looks like any shot at catching Cincinnati for the division title is out of reach. So the Birds are going to have to play a must win wildcard play in game.
