BELLEVILLE — St. Clair County Sheriff's Department have one person in custody in connection with a mid-afternoon shooting on Carlyle Avenue on Monday.
Deputies received a call about a shooting near the BP Food Mart at 1100 Carlyle Ave. at 5:15 p.m. on Monday. A dispute between two groups erupted in gunfire, said Sgt. Mike Hundelt.
"It was truly, truly amazing that no one was hurt or hit by a stray bullet," Hundelt said. "At that time of day, there are cars driving by and people walking around. It is truly amazing and lucky that no one was hurt."
During the investigation, deputies learned the identity of a suspect, who is now in custody, Hundelt said. Late Monday, deputies took that suspect into custody and searched an apartment on West Avenue.
"Several items of evidentiary value were taken from the apartment," Hundelt said.
Charges are pending. The case will be presented to prosecutors for charges later Tuesday or early Wednesday, Hundelt said.
Police also located a silver Pontiac that may be connected to the shooting, Hundelt said. A search continues for the car's owner.
Two men who were riding in a green Ford Mustang were taken in for questioning after they were stopped on Eastview Drive on Monday evening, but Hundelt said Tuesday it wasn't clear whether they were part of the altercation or just driving by.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but Hundelt said the shooting was not random.
"This was not a random shooting," Hundelt said. "These two parties have a history."
