Driver charged with DUI in death of East St. Louis pedestrian

Published: October 6, 2012

— A man who police said was driving under the influence of alcohol when he struck and killed a pedestrian at 25th and Lynch streets in East St. Louis on Wednesday has been charged with aggravated DUI and failure to report an accident involving death.

Marlin Turner, 29, of Cahokia was charged Saturday by St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly's office.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Gilda Johnson said Turner, who was driving a 2002 Jeep, left the scene after the accident and surrendered the following day. The pedestrian was identified as Orlando Wilson, 48, of East St. Louis.

Turner was northbound on 25th Street when he ran a stop sign and struck the pedestrian, Johnson said.

Bail was set for Turner on the two charges at $250,000. He was being held Saturday in an East St. Louis jail cell, pending transfer to the St. Clair County Jail, Johnson said.

Johnson said the fatality occurred the same day as a fatal crash involving a stolen police car on 70th and State streets. Maxsimillion Quarles-Gaston died in that crash. Ricky Raper, 49, of East St. Louis, was charged with first-degree murder in that case. He was being held at St. Clair County Jail.
