BELLEVILLE — A Southwestern Illinois College student was found to be in possession of a firearm Thursday afternoon on the Belleville campus.
Mike Fleming, a spokeman for SWIC, said a tip from a student about potential drug activity on campus led SWIC Public Safety officers to approach and search the suspected person at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
A firearm was found to be in his possession. No drugs were found.
Fleming said the suspect was taken into custody and released to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.
The student is facing possible criminal charges as the Sheriff's Department and SWIC Public Safety jointly investigate the incident, according to Fleming.
Following the criminal investigation, Fleming said the student will be subject to the standard student disciplinary process at SWIC.
