United Way short of fundraising goals

Published: October 27, 2012

The Illinois Division of the United Way of Greater St. Louis is about $545,000 short of its fundraising goal with less than two weeks to go in its 2012 campaign.

The group reported it has raised $1.07 million of its $1.62 million campaign goal. The official end of the 2012 fundraising period is Nov. 7, although collections typically go beyond that date.

The Illinois Division will host its annual Thank You Reception on Thursday, Nov. 29, for those who have contributed to this year's campaign.

Overall, the United Way of Greater St. Louis' annual fundraising campaign has raised $53.9 million toward its $72 million campaign goal for 2012.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Illinois Division of United Way is looking for organizations to help out with their annual Community Christmas event by serving as a donation drop-off location.

"Our goal this year is to have 160 boxes for donations throughout the area at different organizations where anyone can drop off items throughout the day," said Dawna Gilbreath, coordinator of Community Christmas.

Community Christmas begins Monday, Nov. 5, when boxes will be delivered to participating businesses and will remain their until Dec. 13. Donations to be placed in the boxes include non-perishable food items, new clothes for all ages, new winter weather necessities like gloves, hats and scarves, blankets, baby care items, hygiene items and toys.

Cash donations are also accepted and should be sent to United Way at 263 S. Sixth St., Wood River, IL 62095 and marked as Attn: Community Christmas.

Donations received will go to support 14 local agencies to help those in need of these items during the holiday season.
