A family traveling across the country from Colorado to Florida accidentally left a 12-year-old boy at a metro-east gas station over the weekend.
According to police, at about 7 p.m. Saturday the family pulled over to get gas at the Motomart on Greenmount Road in Shiloh. The boy, who was sleeping under a blanket when the family stopped, got out to use the restroom without mentioning it to anyone. After their two vehicles were refueled, the family left without realizing the boy was still inside the store.
Police sent out a bulletin and, about an hour later, an Illinois State Trooper was able to track the family down on Interstate 57 and send them back to Shiloh to retrieve the boy.
They were able to resume their journey around 10 p.m. The family was not identified.
