McKendree gets past SIUE Silver

LEBANON -- The McKendree University hockey team posted its second win in as many nights with a 4-1 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (Silver) at the East Alton Ice Arena.

Four different players scored in leading the Bearcats to the weekend sweep of the Cougars. McKendree also defeated SIUE (Silver) 7-0 on Friday night. The Bearcats are now 3-3 on the season and will continue their six-game home stand Friday with a match against Purdue University. Game time is TBA.

In the win, McKendree grabbed a 1-0 lead with 14:47 left in the first period on a goal by junior wing Brandon Riley (Belleville West) with assists credited to freshman center Nick Faulkner and senior wing Derek Sallee (Highland). SIUE (Silver) tied the match midway through the second period before the Bearcats took control with a pair of second-period tallies. Senior wing Nic Rolla (O'Fallon) put McKendree in front to stay at 2-1 with an even-strength goal off a pass from senior defenseman Derek Hartung (Belleville West) with 8:48 left in the second period. Junior center/wing Carlos Galvan struck just 20 seconds later with assists going to Rolla and senior center J. David Coleman.

Hartung finished off the scoring with an unassisted goal in the early stages of the third period.

Senior Nathan Campo capped a stellar weekend in goal, stopping 27 of 28 Cougar shots to earn the victory.

Women's basketball

McKendree picked eighth in GLVC poll

LEBANON -- The McKendree University women's basketball team was picked to finish in eighth place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division. The GLVC's 2012-13 preseason poll was voted on by the league coaches and ranks the top eight teams in each of the conference's two divisions.

The Bearcats are competing in their first season of GLVC play during the 2012-13 season. McKendree posted an 8-22 overall record last season, and returns seven letterwinners, including all five starters. The Bearcats will begin their season on Nov. 10 at Missouri Baptist University, while the home opener is set for Nov. 13 in a non-conference game against Missouri S&T at 7 p.m.

University of Indianapolis was the unanimous choice in the East Division with 115 points, followed by UW-Parkside finishing second with 91 points. Kentucky Wesleyan came in third with 86 points. Bellarmine followed in fourth place with 81 points, while Lewis and Southern Indiana tied for fifth with 60 points. Saint Joseph's received 50 points to finish seventh in the poll.

Drury University was picked to win the GLVC West Division, edging defending conference champion Maryville University by seven votes.

Volleyball

Bearcats host Bellarmine in league tilt

LEBANON -- The McKendree University volleyball team will continue its home stand Tuesday when Bellarmine University comes to town for another GLVC contest. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center.

The Bearcats saw its three-match win streak come to an end as visiting Lewis University posted a three-set sweep of the Bearcats. The Flyers won by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-21.

With the loss, McKendree slips to 12-14 overall and 6-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Junior outside hitter Maureen Nesbit (Althoff) and freshman middle hitter Lauren Apetz each had nine kills to pace McKendree offensively. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Wessel (Waterloo Gibault) chipped in with eight kills. Junior setter Abby Hanger (Belleville West) registered 31 assists, while junior libero Maddie Kelly notched a match-high 29 digs in the effort for the Bearcats.

In the first set, McKendree played from behind for most of the contest but managed to grab a lead in the later stages. Wessel had three kills during an 8-2 spurt that pushed the Bearcats out to a 23-22 lead. However, Lewis rallied to win the final three points and take the set by two points.

From that point, Lewis trailed just once over the final two sets, which came at 4-3 in the second set when Apetz registered a kill. Carly Perschnick pace the Flyers (18-9, 10-3 GLVC) with a match-high 15 kills, while Leigh Barea handed out 37 assists in the contest. Lewis swept the season series from McKendree as the Flyers won the first meeting 3-0 back on Sept. 28 in Romeoville.

SIUE loses in 5 sets to Tennessee-Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. -- Tenneessee-Martin held off Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's charge in a five-set volleyball win at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

The Skyhawks won the first two sets, dropped the next two sets, and then held on in the final set. UT Martin improved to 10-16 overall and 6-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 27-25, 25-18, 22-25, 21-25, 15-13 win.

SIUE's defense turned in another stellar performance with 11 blocks, including six from Kelsey Augustine and four from Kristen Torre. The Cougars, 8-15 overall and 4-8 in the OVC, hit .199 for the match behind 12 kills from Emma Anderson and 11 from Augustine.

SIUE's road trip continues next weekend at Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State.

Men's soccer

Cougars win final MVC regular season game

CONWAY, Ark.-- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team closed out the Missouri Valley Conference regular season with a 1-0 victory at Central Arkansas.

The Cougars, 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the MVC, will wait for the remaining schedule to be completed to find out their seed for the State Farm MVC Championships Nov. 7-11 in Peoria. SIUE currently holds second place in league play. The rest of the MVC has either one or two matches left tonight and next week before the seeds are final.

The top two teams in the State Farm MVC Tournament earned first-round byes. The next four teams play in the quarterfinal round Nov. 7.

Christian Volesky scored the game's lone goal at 41:12. Volesky connected on the MVC-leading ninth goal of the season and his second game winner.

SIUE posted its seventh shutout of the season. Kent Kobernus was in goal for the Cougars and grabbed three saves for his third solo shutout .

Central Arkansas dropped to 1-4 in the MVC and 7-8 overall.

While MVC season is now complete for the Cougars, SIUE's regular season includes one more road match. The Cougars travel to Duke for a 6 p.m. CDT match Friday in Durham, N.C.

Bearcats blanked in final game of season

LEBANON -- The McKendree University men's soccer team surrendered three second-half goals to end its season with a 3-0 loss to Bellarmine University.

The Bearcats close out their 2012 season with a record of 9-8 overall and 7-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, narrowly missing out on a berth into the conference tournament in its first season of membership.

The first half was evenly matched, with Bellarmine holding a slight 8-6 edge in shots taken, but the visitors turned up the pressure in the second half. The Knights scored goals in the 47th, 63rd, and 81st minutes to jump out to the 3-0 win.

Freshman goalkeeper Scott Armistead started the match and had three saves in 36:20 in goal, while fellow freshman goalkeeper Matt Derrington finished the final 53:40 of the match and surrendered all three goals. Derrington fell to 4-3 overall after the loss.

Women's soccer

Mc Kendree loses on Senior Night

LEBANON -- The McKendree University women's soccer team put Bellarmine University to the test but gave up a goal in the final minute to drop its final Great Lakes Valley Conference match of the season 1-0.

The Bearcats fall to 8-6-2 overall and 7-6-2 in the GLVC with the loss.

McKendree edged Bellarmine in shot attempts in the match, 12-9, but the Knights placed five of its shots on goal, compared to the Bearcat's four in the contest. The game appeared to be heading to overtime, but a counter-attack by Bellarmine found a hole and Allyson Palmer scored the lone goal of the contest with 46 seconds left to give the Knights the win.

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Dudas grabbed four saves in the loss and fell to 8-6-2 overall on the season.
