Man faces charges after biting Edwardsville cop

Published: October 31, 2012

A man was charged with aggravated battery for biting an Edwardsville police officer in the arm.

Kevin S. Shashack, 41, was released from jail after he posted $10,000 in bond.

Madison County State's Attorney spokeswoman Stephanee Smith said officers responded to a domestic disturbance on Oct. 23.

There was a scuffle as officers tried to subdue Shashack, and he bit Edwardsville Police Officer Justin Towell in the arm.

Police used a Taser to subdue Shashack, Smith said.

Shashack's bite broke the skin on Towell's arm, but the officer did not suffer serious injuries and has returned to work.

A preliminary hearing for Shashack was scheduled for Nov. 9.

Edwardsville Police Lt. Scott Evers said that any time there is a use of force, department policy calls for a review of the incident and a check to ensure police equipment -- in this case, a Taser -- is functioning properly.

Results of the departmental review of the incident was not immediately available.
