Support school bond issue

Published: November 3, 2012

One of the cuts that the Highland school board is discussing is closing New Douglas Elementary School and possibly Grantfork Upper Elementary. All of the kids in grades K-5 would be housed at Alhambra and the sixth grade would be bused to the middle school. The middle school concept would be scrapped and it would revert to a junior high.

For me, this is an unacceptable outcome. I have two children at New Douglas and I can see the excellent education they are receiving. They beg to go to school early and to stay late.

We need this school to stay open not because the kids continually outscore other kids in the district and the state almost every single year, but because this school is the heart of our wonderful little town.

Please educate yourself on what the school district is proposing and weigh it with what this school provides for this town and its children. For $17 per $150,000 of assessed value, you can help save our schools.

This is not a tax that will stay on your tax bill forever. After nine years it will go away. Basically, for less than the cost of a dinner out for two people, we can keep our tradition of growing exceptional learners going strong.

Please vote "yes."
