Sen. James Clayborne appeared to be on his way to another term in office, based on partial returns in the 57th Illinois Senate District.

With 170 of 203 precincts reporting, the latest vote totals:

James Clayborne (D): 38,666

Dave Barnes (R): 32,014

Clayborne, a Belleville attorney, was first elected to the Senate in 1995 and is the Senate's majority leader.

Barnes is a Belleville insurance agent and St. Clair Township trustee.

The 57th Senate District stretches from East St. Louis to Mascoutah. Belleville is at the geographic heart of the district.
