Kern retains St. Clair County Board chairman position

Incumbent Mark Kern looked to retain his St. Clair County Board chairman seat following Tuesday's election with all 205 precincts reporting in St. Clair County.

Kern, a Belleville Democrat, received 56,722 votes and Jon McLean, a Belleville Republican, with 44,509 votes in St. Clair County. Kern had 10,958 votes in final results from East St. Louis, which has a separate election board, compared to 684 for McLean. That gave Kern a total of 67,680 ballots to McLean's 45,193.

"I appreciate the support of St. Clair County, and I look forward to serving another four years," Kern said late Tuesday night. "We have a lot of good things going on, and I look forward to continue working for St. Clair County in the future."

Kern, 48, owns Belleville Mechanical Inc., a commercial heating and cooling business, and previously served as mayor of Belleville. Kern has served as County Board chairman the past eight years.

McLean, 30, of Belleville, is an insurance agent and chair of the St. Clair County Republican Central Committee. McLean is Kern's first opponent in eight years.

St. Clair County coroner Rick Stone, auditor Patty Sprague and recorder Michael Costello also retained their jobs in the election.

With all 205 St. Clair County's precincts reporting, the vote totals were as follows:

Coroner race: Stone (D-Smithton) 59,188 votes. Andrew Colon (R-O'Fallon) 40,762 votes in St. Clair County and 10,883 for Kern and 780 for Colon for a total of 70,071 for Stone and 41,542 for Colon.

Auditor race: Sprague (D-Belleville) 53,514 votes. Caroline Stark (R-Smithton) 45,756 votes in St. Clair County. Sprague got 10,720 votes in East St. Louis compared to 776 for Stark for a total of 62,234 for Sprague and 46,532 for Stark.

Recorder race: Costello (D-Belleville) 58,197 votes. Greg Bridgman (R-Swansea) 41,750 votes in St. Clair County. In East St. Louis Costello got 10,938 votes compared to 387 for Bridgman for a total of 69,135 for Costello and 11,325 for Bridgman.

Board of Review race: Michael Crockett Jr. (D-Cahokia) 53,658 votes and Whitney Wisnasky-Bettorf (R-Lebanon) 44,525 votes in St Clair County. In East St. Louis, Crockett received 11,192 votes to Wisnasky-Bettorf's 357 for a total of 64,350 votes for Crocket to 44,882 for Wisnasky-Bettorf.

The vote totals for the contested St. Clair County Board seats were as follows:

District 4: Nick Miller (R-Lebanon) 2,037 votes over Ronald Hasemann (D-Lebanon) 1,715 votes.

District 9: Incumbent C. Richard Vernier (D-Belleville) topped challenger Catherine Kreher (R-Belleville) with 2,534 votes against 1,324 votes.

District 11: Incumbent Jerry Dinges (D-Belleville) had 1,751 votes to beat Joe Swierczek (R-Belleville) with 1,581 votes.

District 12: Incumbent Patricia Kievlan Keeley (D-Belleville) had 2,127 votes and Richard Davis (R-Belleville) had 1,603 votes.

District 14: Bob Trentman (D-Belleville) beat challenger Alexa Edwards (R-Belleville) with 2,443 votes against 1,448 votes.

District 16: Incumbent June Chartrand (D-Dupo) won with 2,105 votes against David Langford (R-Dupo) who had 1,020 votes.

District 17: Incumbent Curtis Jones (D-Belleville) had 2,367 votes and Roy Mueller (R-Belleville) had 1,859 votes.

District 20: Mike Baker (D-Mascoutah) had 2,019 votes and Scott A. Hassebrock (R-Mascoutah) had 1,963 votes.

District 22: Incumbent Michael O'Donnell (R-Millstadt) was leading with 2,460 votes against challenger Thomas 'Wally' Blatz (D-Millstadt) 2,190 votes.

District 23: Dennis Renner (D-O'Fallon) had 2,096 votes and incumbent William Blair (R-Shiloh) had 1,845 votes.

District 25: Curtis McCall (Good Government -- Cahokia) edged Joe Morgan (D-Cahokia) with 1,764 votes to 1,740.

District 26: Larry W. Stammer, Jr. (D-Belleville) had 1,929 votes and James Foote (R-Belleville) had 1,644 votes.

District 27: Incumbent Kenneth Sharkey (D-Fairview Heights) was leading with 2,430 votes against challenger Matthew Stirrup (R-Fairview Heights) 1,306 votes.

District 29: Incumbent Carol Clark (D-Caseyeville) had 2,186 votes and challenger Laurence Cole (R-O'Fallon) had 1,921 votes.
