Major weekend road construction ahead in St. Louis

Published: November 8, 2012

Hang in there motorists, the work on Interstate 64 between Illinois and Missouri is nearly done.

The eastbound lanes and ramps of Interstate 64 between Jefferson Avenue and the Poplar Street Bridge will be closed during the weekend beginning at 8 p.m. Friday. The closure is the second of three weekend closures scheduled for the month so crews can remove and replace the surface of the road and replace expansion joints on the bridge. The resurfacing of the double deck structure of Interstate 64 is being done from the Mississippi River to 21st Street. The detour around this weekend's closure will be to take Jefferson to eastbound Interstate 44 and follow the interstate back to the Poplar Street Bridge.

One lane and most ramps are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday and all lanes will follow suit by 2 p.m. in time for the evening rush.

"Hopefully this project will be done by the end of the year," said Andrew Gates, a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Transportation. "We believe that we will only have two more weekend closures for the remainder of the year, but, that all depends on weather or if something comes up as they are working. But, we are pretty sure that will pretty much be it and we are anticipating completion before the end of December.

Crews will be working on the section of the double deck just over Interstate 55 and the depressed lanes of Interstate 70 downtown. While crews are working on the roadway above, drivers on Interstate 55 heading to the Interstate 70 depressed lanes may be detoured onto Memorial Drive and back to the interstate for safety.

The Pine Street and Forest Park Avenue ramps to eastbound Interstate 64 remain closed until crews are able to complete joint work at the top of the ramps.
