Major Case Squad investigates Granite City shooting death

Published: November 9, 2012

Investigators with the Major Case Squad worked Friday tracking down leads as they tried to find out who shot a Granite City man who was left to die in an alley.

The victim, Charles A. Weiss, 54, was found about 9:25 p.m. Thursday in the alley behind a house in the 1200 block of Meridian Avenue in Granite City.

Maj. Jeff Connor said Weiss was conscious for a short period of time after being shot and provided "a little bit of information."

Three or four male suspects were believed to be involved in the shooting, according to Connor.

Police do not know the motive, but suspect it might have been robbery. Connor said Weiss made the comment that "they tried to rob me." Connor wouldn't say if anything was taken from Weiss.

Weiss was shot one time in the chest and tried to walk from the scene before collapsing in the roadway, police said.

He was transported to Gateway Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m.

An autopsy conducted Friday morning confirmed Weiss died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Police did not release a detailed description of the suspects. It was the second time in the last week the Major Case Squad investigated a murder case in the metro-east.

On Sunday, the squad helped investigate the murder of Travon O. Bey, 23, of East St. Louis, who was found dead in a house at 2028 Fifth St. in Madison.

Anyone with information about Weiss' death is asked to call the Granite City Police Department at 877-6111.

"We don't have any solid leads at this point," Connor said.

"We are still trying to find witnesses."
