The Madison County Sheriff's Department is investigating a two-car crash that has killed one person.

Capt. Mike Dixon said the accident happened about 12:50 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Troy-O'Fallon Road, midway between Troy and O'Fallon. Dixon said a 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at 2:36 p.m. after she was transported to Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

The victim was driving northbound when her vehicle entered into a southbound lane and hit another vehicle. Two passengers in the southbound vehicle are in stable condition and are being treated for what police believe are non-life threatening injuries.

Police are not releasing the deceased victim's name until her family is contacted.
