Investigators are close to solving the murder of a Madison man who was shot then left to die in an alley.

"We anticipate that we will make an announcement (on Monday)," said Major Jeff Connor, commander of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis.

Major Case Squad members worked through the night on Saturday and all day Sunday tracking leads in the murder of Charles A. Weiss, 54.

There has been someone working the case since it happened, Connor said.

Weiss was found shot 9:25 p.m. Thursday in an alley near the 1200 block of Meridian Ave. in Granite City. Before he succumbed to his injuries, Weiss told police that "they tried to rob me."

Weiss sustained a single gunshot would to the chest. He tried to walk away from the scene when he collapsed in the ally. Three or four male suspects were believed to be involved in the shooting.

In 2007, Weiss was sentenced to a year of supervision on charge of being a pedestrian under the influence of alcohol.
