Cardinals cut McClellan loose, sign back up catcher Johnson

Posted by Scott Wuerz on November 13, 2012

The Cardinals have cut ties with relief pitcher Kyle McClellan, a St. Louis area native who won 12 games in 2011 as an emergency starter in place of the injured Adam Wainwright.

But McClellan apparently tore his arm up in the process. He was never the same after the first half of 2011 and missed most of the 2012 campaign after struggling to a 5.30 ERA in 16 games.

In other business Tuesday, the Cardinals have signed veteran back-up catcher Rob Johnson to a minor league deal.

I thought youngster Tony Cruz didn't do a bad job backstopping starter Yadier Molina. But apparently the Birds wanted some more experience.
