Published: November 16, 2012

A 65-year-old Alton woman is dead after a two-car accident in Madison County on Thursday afternoon.

Nell S. Johnston was in the back seat of a 2001 Honda Accord driven by Carol S. Garrett, 65, of Alton. Garrett was traveling west on Route 143 near the entrance ramp to Interstate 255. She had a green light, according to Illinois State Police, but was either stopped or had slowed. Garrett's car was struck in the rear end by a 2002 GMC Yukon driven by Philip A. Cain, 28, of Bethalto, according to an Illinois State Police release.

Cain and Garrett were injured. They were both taken to Alton Memorial Hospital.

Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene by Madison County Coroner Todd Ballard. She was wearing her seat belt.

Cain was cited for driving with a suspended drivers' license, operation on an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and failure to wear seat belt.
