The Madison County Coroner's Office has identified a barge worker who died Thursday after falling into the Mississippi River.

Jason T. Sagez, 23 of Hardin, fell off a barge into the water near Hartford at about 5 p.m., According to Deputy Coroner Roger Smith an autopsy revealed that Sagez died because of blunt force trauma to the pelvis.

Witnesses said a chain that was under tension snapped and struck him. Co-workers jumped in after Sagez and were able to drag him onto a dock. But neither they nor emergency responders who arrived a short time later were able to revive him.
