Magnitude 3.6 quake hits Mount Carmel

MOUNT CARMEL - The U.S. Geological Survey registered a magnitude 3.6 earthquake northwest of Mount Carmel just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The earthquake was minor. No significant damage or injuries were reported.

This area of Illinois sits in the Ozark dome region, which covers parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas and stretches from Indianapolis and St. Louis to Memphis.

Moderately frequent earthquakes occur at irregular intervals throughout the region, according to the USGS.
