Texting gets in way of school

Published: November 20, 2012

In regard to your article Nov. 4, "Technology goes to school": Unlike the mentioned school officials, I believe it is a bad idea to allow students to bring their electronic devices to the classroom. This will lead to students using their phones or iPods in class to text or get on social networking sites, distracting them from what they should be paying attention to in the classroom.

As a student at Belleville East High School, I have witnessed how distracting electronic devices can be. Whether it is music blasting while I am trying to work or the clicking of texting, cell phones distract both the users and their peers around them.

If the electronic devices remain off and in the student's backpack or locker, this will result in a better learning environment. Furthermore, as mentioned in the article, students who cannot afford or do not have these devices will not feel left out.
