This is the season for giving

Published: November 22, 2012

Thanksgiving Day marks the return of the BND’s series spotlighting local charities.

We started the annual series in 2005. Known then as “A Time for Giving,” it has become a Christmas season tradition, beginning on Thanksgiving Day and continuing daily through New Year’s Day.

It has a different name now, “Giving from the Heart,” but the goal is the same: to connect our generous readers to organizations that help the less fortunate.

Each day, we profile a different charity and tell how you can help the group fulfill its mission. We also run a list of charities at bnd.com/giving  .

When we launched the series seven years ago, charitable groups across the country were concerned about falling donations. Americans’ resources were already stretched, in part, because they had given so much to help victims of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters that year. With so many others in need as well, charities had a huge challenge.

The challenge may be even greater today because of the dismal economy. Many of our neighbors are struggling to make ends meet. Your donation of cash, goods or volunteer time — giving from the heart — would make a difference in the lives of others.

Please consider one of the charitable organizations listed in our series or give to another cause if you can afford to contribute this year.

If you know of a charity that ought to be included in our series or on our charity list at bnd.com/giving  , please contact us at 618-239-2460 or at mbaran@bnd.com  .

As always, we thank you for reading the BND and visiting bnd.com  .
