FAIRVIEW — A 25-year-old O'Fallon man who attempted to steal a Black Friday shopper's purse has been charged with theft.
According to Fairview Heights police, officers responded to Old Tyme Pottery located in the 10700 block of Lincoln Trail for a report of robbery at 2:58 p.m. Friday.
A suspect identified as Aaron K. Sumida, 25, of O'Fallon allegedly grabbed a shopper's purse and began to run away. The victim grabbed her purse and the suspect.
The suspect tried to escape by hitting the victim's hands and pulling away, police said. The victim gave chase through the store until the victim's husband tackled the suspect to the ground and held him with the assistance of store employees until police arrived.
Sumida was charged by the St. Clair County state's attorney's office with theft from a person, a Class 3 criminal felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A criminal misdemeanor. Sumida's bond was set at $100,000.
