BROOKLYN — Illinois State police identified the suspect in a shooting outside a Brooklyn strip club as Maurice D. Shelton, 29, of 1701 O'Fallon St., St. Louis.
Shelton was charged Thursday with murder in the killing, of 23-year-old Walter Taylor of the 1200 block of Cleveland Ave., in East St. Louis.
Bail for Shelton was set at $2 million. He is not in custody.
Taylor and the suspect got into an argument outside of the Pink Slip nightclub while they and other patrons were standing in line waiting to get inside of the club, located at 114 S. Fourth St.
The suspect pulled a weapon out and shot the victim, police said. Anyone with information about Shelton's whereabouts is asked to contact your local police department or Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-Tips.
"Some of the violence that has partially subsided in East St. Louis has shifted to Brooklyn, a destination of the Underground Railroad to freedom," St. Clair County State's Attorney Brenden Kelly said.
"For the citizens there, it has become a path to misery and chaos on a nightly basis. It's time for what's left of the village government to join local and federal leaders to consider some stronger creative action to address this unconscionable situation."
