Police suspect that a woman whose body was found Saturday morning along Illinois 3 in Granite City is the victim of a hit-and-run.
The body of Shari L. Watts, 50, of East Alton was found along the northbound lanes of the highway, just south of Niedringhaus Avenue, shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday.
"At this point, the death appears to be the result of a hit-and-run pedestrian accident," said Granite City Police Major Jeff Connor. "We believe the accident may have taken place several hours before the discovery."
Connor said Watts might have been in the Brooklyn area prior to the incident.
"We have received some information that leads us to believe she was in the Brooklyn area around 7:30 p.m. Friday, seeking a ride home," Connor said.
Police asked that anyone who saw anything or know anything about the incident call the Granite City Police Department at 877-6111 or Crime Stoppers at (866) 371-TIPS (8477).
Watts was wearing jeans and a red jacket.
