Keep political opinions out of classrooms

Published: December 2, 2012

Kentucky high school teacher Kendra Baker crossed a line when she wrote, "You can't be a Democrat and go to heaven" on her classroom board.

Most of my teachers have kept their political views a secret, and those who haven't have not tried to force their political views on the students.

While I believe discussing politics in school can be important to keep students informed, it should strictly be facts and not political party-based opinions.

I do not in any way support what the teacher has done, but I do think the drastic measure of a girl in the class being home schooled is a little extreme. Yes, she may be offended but the teacher will surely face consequences for her actions. She should not miss out on the rest of her senior year of high school because one person said something that was offensive.

Throughout life, everyone has their own opinions and some may be more forceful than others, but people have to learn to support what they believe in and not be intimidated be everyone who doesn't agree with them.
