Suspect in custody in Granite City fatal hit-and-run

Published: December 2, 2012

Police have a suspect in custody on Sunday in a fatal hit-and-run the day before in Granite City.

The body of Shari L. Watts, 50, of East Alton was found along the northbound lanes of Illinois 3, just south of Niedringhaus Avenue, shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday.

Granite City Police Major Jeff Connor said Sunday police have also impounded a vehicle.

Police will present the case to the Madison County State's Attorney's Office on Monday for possible charges, Connor said.

Connor did not release other details and said more information will follow pending charges.

On Saturday, Connor said Watts' death appears to be the result of a hit-and-run pedestrian accident. Police said she might have been in the Brooklyn area before the incident, seeking a ride home.
