Rumor Mill: Cardinals interested in Scott Hairston

Published: December 3, 2012

The Cardinals have reportedly called outfielder Scott Hairston's people in their quest to add some right handed flexibility.

Hairston, 32, played for the Mets in 2012, batting .263 with 20 home runs in 398 plate appearances.

If he signed with St. Louis, Hairston would likely start against some lefties in centerfield and fill in for Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday in the outfield corners when they needed a break. He can also play a little bit of second base in a pinch.

It remains to be seen if Hairston would be willing to take a playing time downgrade to play with the Cardinals, especially since the Mets reportedly would like to bring him back and the Yankees have inquired about his interest in defecting across town.
