EAST ST. LOUIS — A man who had been employed by the East St. Louis Housing Authority for about a year has been accused of stealing stoves and refrigerators from the agency.
Robert M. Blanchard, 50, of 509 N. 59th St., Washington Park, was charged Wednesday by the St. Clair County State's Attorney's office with felony theft.
The total value of the property is not in excess of $500.
Blanchard was arrested Tuesday and was being held in the St. Clair County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bail.
Elizabeth Tolliver, executive director of the East St. Louis Housing Authority, said police had been investigating the theft for a couple of months.
Tolliver said she understands that because of the economy things are hard for a lot of people. But, she said the suspect had a job and she can't understand how he could put his job in jeopardy for a few dollars.
Asked whether Blanchard would remain an employee, Tolliver said there is a process that employees have to go through. And, she could not say whether he would continue as an employee at this time.
